Summer Drink: The Gin Garden

Jimi Hendrix loved having cucumber with gin, so that should already sell you the drink that I am about to describe.

What you need is
Cucumber
Elederflower cordial
Cloudy apple juice (none of the concentrate junk)
A good gin
Soda water

Method
1. Muddle some diced cucumber with the elderflower (muddle the cucumber a lot before you add the elderflower, otherwise it’ll get quite difficult)

2. Add to a cocktail shaker with the apple juice and gin.

3. Shake over ice.

4. Strain into a martini glass.

5. Topping up with soda water is optional. If you want to make it a long drink, add more gin (to give it a kick like the martini) and then add the soda water.

9 days and this mess is over. The passed few weeks in this windowless lab has given me severe cabin fever. Man feels like Snake Plissken in Escape from New York, except i have use of both eyes and a better left hook.

I figured that I would probably be a better actor than a computer scientist. However, I don’t want to waste my time learning to act. I’m going to jump into the deep end and get myself an agent. Someone like Ari would be perfect.

I saw a trailer for the new film precious. It is about a fat lady who gets hit by pots and pans. She has Mariah Carey as a councilor too.

Not much to say on the matter. Precious did, however, remind me of Leroy’s mother, the protagonist  in the classic movie, Surf Nazis must die. Yes, this film does exist and here is the trailer. And Leroy’s mother don’t get hit with pans.

Hey Kanye

there are some artists I don’t follow at all even though they are in my face all the time. Kanye West is one of these artists. That was until I heard Robocop. The boy did well. I know I’m behind the times.

I’ll sleep when I’m dead

I got quite drunk last month on a night out to the globe on Talbot Rd, and this resulted in me deliberately dropping my mp3 player into a glass of water when I arrived home. What was worse is at the time I thought that this was a totally natural thing to do. That was until the following morning where I woke up to see my mp3 submerged in water. This meant I have had to read on the tube. I hate reading.

Thankfully, I borrowed a book about Warren Zevon. It’s good, but I still miss my mp3 player.

Eurovision Gash Contest

I’ve been in labs today and my friend Kiaran manged to listen to every entrant of the Eurovison song contest during his study session. We came to the conclusion that Azerbaijan, Turkey and Finland had the best looking girls. Don’t know who actually won, so I can’t tell you if good looks had anything to do with it.  Portugal’s entrant looked like she was looking for the nearest pie shop.

And the Monkey

Ok, this is  here because  a lot of people from outside the U.K. who read this blog haven’t heard this unusual story and when I told an AMericnafrined yesterday, they burst out laughing. Here it is copy and pasted from the “this is Hartlepool site”.

During the Napoleonic Wars there was a fear of a French invasion of Britain and much public concern about the possibility of French infiltrators and spies.

The fishermen of Hartlepool fearing an invasion kept a close watch on the French vessel as it struggled against the storm but when the vessel was severely battered and sunk they turned their attention to the wreckage washed ashore. Among the wreckage lay one wet and sorrowful looking survivor, the ship’s pet monkey dressed to amuse in a military style uniform.

The hanging was the least of his worries

The fishermen apparently questioned the monkey and held a beach-based trial. Unfamiliar with what a Frenchman looked like they came to the conclusion that this monkey was a French spy and should be sentenced to death. The unfortunate creature was to die by hanging, with the mast of a fishing boat (a coble) providing a convenient gallows.

Never shied away from science

I’m a computer scientist. I have still yet to find a way to make it sound interesting. Bar a post on Godel and Turing, I have shied away from writing about anything science based, until yesterday I saw this video that would make you change your mind about Maths and bring the fun back to it.

On june 11th the Technology and Enterpise Club will be holding their annual Technology Conference. This actually looks quite decent and for £35 (I was too late to get the earlybird tickets) is quite reasonable to see the VP at Google for Search Products and User Experiene, the Director of the Legatum Center at MIT and the MD Europe of Linkedin. Goals in Life #1: Megan Fox

I didn’t watch the first Transformers film because I knew the second one would have better effects and story. The basis of this is my Marvel theory in which the first film of a Marvel franchise will put too much emphasis on the origin and family members, girlfriends etc. By missing out on Transformers 1, I also missed out on Megan Fox and putting her on my goals in life list a little sooner.

It’s a real shame that this magazine is no longer available. I remember getting my first issue a long time ago in San Francisco as the skate distributors in England didn’t seem to like bringing it over to our shores. The best read for any teenage boy at the time.
