I fucked off to Madrid to eat a baby pig. It was tasty and I thoroughly recommend it. Anyway, I’m sure you were all stuffing your greedy faces, so hopefully this site wasn’t missed too much.
Nearly everyone I know dislikes Bernard for his pre fight antics and general rudeness, but if you look a bit deeper, you’ll realise what a great boxer he really is.
Bernard is 44 years old, has dominated the middleweight division until very suspect losses to Jermain Taylor. Then he moved up to light heavyweight where he beat everyone in his path, bar Joe Calzaghe who could have easily been given the lower score by the judges in that fight. When everyone thinks that Bernard had met his match, he proved everyone wrong. Pavlik, Trinidad and Tarver are examples of that.
Hardened by the tough streets of Philadelphia and after spending a stint in prison, Bernard made sure he didn’t return to a life of criminality by becoming a boxer, since he did so well in the prison league.
As Steve Bunce recognised when interviewing him before the Calzaghe fight, Bernard doesn’t need the hype men behind him to tell him he’s the champ and the best on the planet. His confidence was so high that all he had after his training sessions was an empty apartment with DVD’s of Calzaghe’s fights.
Bernard can go into a ring, find your greatest weapon, whether it be your jab, your right hook or your uppercut and take it away from you. Then its just a matter of picking you apart. So what if he’s defensive and the box office sales aren’t through the roof – you’re not in the game to get beaten up, and you can’t say that Bernard has been beaten up in any of his past fights.
When Bernard leaves boxing, he will be missed. I can assure you of that, even if you do hate him.
“We all in this room got jobs, got things that we have to do to show our superiors that we’re doing a great job. Whether you work for HBO, the newspapers, hey, whether you clean up these tables or whatever, I respect your job. But you must deliver what you do. Your credibility is judged by what you do. If you’re an athlete, it’s in your performance and winning. And I continue to deliver every time I say I will win. That is proof that Bernard Hopkins, when it comes to delivering in the ring – we can debate outside the ring for life, till I retire – but in the ring I am not a liar.”
